The first disk drive (Floppy Disk Drive) was invented in 1951 by James Van Hise of IBM. Initially, a small box of floppy disk was used in microcomputers. And as the memory of microcomputers grew, the box of floppy disk could not keep up.
Later, in the early 1980s, the first minidisk drives were introduced. The minidisk drives were less than half the size of a floppy disk. In the mid 1980s, the first CompactFlash drives were introduced. These drives were less than a quarter the size of a floppy disk and they could be used for memory expansion. This evolution had a tremendous effect on computers.
By 1990, computers had so many floppy drives that no single person was able to use them all. This was a big problem because every computer needed floppy disks to operate. In order to solve this problem, Intel decided to create a floppy disk drive that is small enough to fit in a computer and can store hundreds of floppy disks. This drive is also used for memory expansion and flash cards. These drives have become smaller and smaller and now we have USB flash drives.
These drives use less than 1/10th the space that a floppy disk occupies. Now, you can easily take your entire digital media library with you without the need for a separate disk drive or tapes. One low-end USB can replace up to 20 floppy disks. Now, you can get USB that can store up to thousands of movies, photos, and music. All your life memories can be in that small magical drive!
There are different brands such as Seagate and Western Digital that offer USB drives for your specific needs.
