Kids love games, they have to. We grew up playing games. From Pong to Super Mario Bros. games and from Frogger to Pac Man, there have been numerous games. You name it and it’s out there. You and your friends are competing, you are winning, you are losing and you are always trying to beat each other. Games in your younger days were played with friends and family members in the living room, in the park, on the street, on the swings and around the park.
Today games are played everywhere! You can play games when you are having dinner with friends, at the park or in the mall, whether they are in your house, at your school or at your friend’s house. Children have games, tablets and video game systems.
Why children and teenagers are so obsessed with video games and tablet games is an interesting question. I know some parents who have not been on social media, or who are on social media only sporadically. But you must admit that children are always on it. They are always looking to their phones, tablets or laptops to see what their friends are up to. They are always looking to interact with their friends, their parents, their teachers and their peers.
So it is important to know why kids love video and tablet games. I have been playing video games since the first generation of Pong. I remember back in elementary school, we got Pong from the department store and played it right away. It was a small black box with a joystick and two paddles for shooting. We would play, compete and lose. It was awesome! We loved games and I guess it is natural to still love games.
I think games have always been there, and they have always had a place in our society. It was the way in which adults communicated with each other. You want to have your children’s approval; it’s the way of the world. You want your kids to do well in life. You want them to be great. So if they like to play games you feel proud of them. You feel good because they are playing with friends and having fun. So, what is it about games and video games that kids love so much?
Are Games the New Television?
One of the reasons why we love video games is because they are like television. A lot of people still love to watch television. They enjoy the shows that they are watching, they watch them in their own time. They enjoy watching their favorite shows when they want to and for as long as they want. Video games, tablets and smartphones are now so important. And they are all so readily available, in their home, at school or at work. We can play a game whenever we want. We can be anywhere. We are able to communicate with people that live far away. And video games are everywhere.
People who are on social media see the same thing in video games. Video games are everywhere; they are in your house, in your bag and in your pockets. There are games in every place! So why would a kid prefer watching television over playing video games? Well, they don’t.
I have been around some kids and their friends who love to play video games. I don’t think I would want to be playing video games all the time. Sure, I love games too but I would love to play with my friends, do homework, play sports or go to the movies. I would love to see what my friends are up to. I would love to go out with my friends. And if I want to see what’s going on I can just use my phone.
