How laptops changed over the years: how much technology changed, not the appearance of the laptop. Laptops became smaller. The screen got larger. The battery became bigger. The keyboard shrunk. The track pad increased. The weight decreased.
We’ve been tracking and documenting the evolution of the laptop for years. With all of the different models, we realized that it’d be more fun to look back on the whole thing as a series, rather than individual years. To make a better series, we decided to look back not only on models, but the changes that we see as the laptops become more popular.
We’re focusing on two major changes: price and portability.
In this series, we’re going to talk about the evolution of the computer port, how the computer has changed and what the best computer port is.
Portability: The Good and The Bad
Let’s talk about the “portability” of laptops. While it’s always been true that laptops are lighter and smaller than desktop PCs, the evolution has been huge. We’ve seen the screen go from 17 inches all the way up to the massive 24 inches, but that’s not the big deal. What’s big is the amount of power that’s available. Laptops have evolved in a very different direction than PCs. While you’ve seen smaller and more powerful computers since the 90s, the portability aspect is something you don’t see very much. You might see a netbook, but you don’t see anything like a Chromebook or iPhone.
Portability in laptops is a lot of factors. Size, weight and storage. In the past, we’ve been very limited in the amount of storage we could get in a laptop. Think of the amount of storage available to you on a modern smartphone or a laptop today. While smartphones will let you easily get gigabytes of storage, and high-end tablets easily get more storage than a typical PC, you’re still limited by what you can fit in. So if the computers could be bigger and still fit in your bag, why would you want a desktop? As mentioned, the portability issue was more pronounced a decade ago. The difference in how a desktop and laptop interact is important. While portability is important to some, if you’re running a gaming rig, you don’t want to put it in your bag and take it with you. Desktops are a bit like your house. They’re not built for portability, and they’re going to look good wherever you put them. A desktop is a place to be. If you want to do more on your computer, you can just plug it in. Laptops take a completely different approach to how you use a computer. A laptop is like your backpack. You’ll want it to feel comfortable, but if you want to do anything more complex, you have to take it out and use it. For me, this approach makes sense. You’re going to be away from home a lot, and you won’t have an easy way to access your files. If you do find yourself wanting to work with your files, there’s the desktop. If you want to have more power on the go, there’s the laptop. The next part is storage. One of the things that’s really changed in recent years is that desktop’s have gotten bigger. We’re not talking the big, bulky desktops of yesteryear. Think about it like an iPad. That iPad is about the same size as a desktop computer, but it has a massive amount of storage. If you’re not limited by its size, you can carry around a whole lot of files.
How laptops price changed over the years
With every passing year, computers become more and more powerful. But what are those extra powers and how are the prices of them changing over time? As technology advances, price always becomes the top thing consumers take into account when buying a computer. But are prices ever going to grow or would they ever stay the same? That’s a tricky question. We all know that the prices of products like smartphones and laptops have been on a consistent rise. But it’s not always clear whether the same thing happens with more powerful computers. In recent years, laptops have been a hot commodity. Even if you’re not a heavy gamer, one of the best things about laptops is the fact that you can take it anywhere, making them a great choice for students. But is that still true for the latest models? We looked at the current prices of laptops and the prices of the same models from 2010, to compare how things have changed. The price of laptops may be changing, but they’re still some of the best laptops you can buy So which laptop is still the best if you’re on a budget? The answer, it turns out, isn’t easy to figure out. Because of their power and popularity, laptops are very versatile, so it depends on what you’re looking for. You can certainly buy a decent laptop for just a few hundred dollars.
The evolution of laptop has really been impactful in a lot of industries and we are blessed with the choices we have now in choosing a laptop so choose wisely!
