Over the last 10 years, laptops have largely evolved from desktops. Now, a few years into a new mobile era, PCs may be moving back to the desktop.
As the mobile device market has exploded, laptops have largely become mobile devices – you can fit a laptop into a bag or a backpack and carry it with you on the train or to an event. This has helped make laptops more useful and accessible to more people. The combination of a mobile device and a laptop has made for a powerful computing environment.
Yet, as more and more of us have laptops or use them at work, we are starting to feel attached to them. Many of us don’t have a lot of experience interacting with computers. Some have more experience on a mobile device than a desktop PC. We are beginning to feel that the laptop is the main computer in our lives.
It is time for the next generation of mobile devices to evolve beyond the mobile device market. So, what is the next evolution?
The next evolution is to bring the power of the PC to the desktop. I am thinking of three things that are possible:
Mobile device to desktop converters
Windows 10
Windows 10 on desktop PCs
Let’s take each one in turn.
Mobile device to desktop converters
Convergence is one thing. But, are convergent devices a good thing? I don’t think so. Why? Convergence forces all sorts of compromises on the product. Take the converged Windows 10 phone, for example. It’s a phone, so you have to limit the screen size to make it fit in your pocket. You need a physical keyboard, so you must put it on a desktop. Then, there is the question of “Which platform are you targeting for convergence?” Will it be Windows Phone, Android, or iOS? Will it be touch-optimized, mouse-optimized, or some combination of the two? Is there a keyboard? Or is there a keyboard cover?
As a result, converging makes it very difficult to put together a good, robust converged product. This means that you end up with a substandard solution, not a superlative solution.
Now, take the combination of a desktop PC and a mobile device. Yes, you can bring the power of the PC to the desktop. You can have a powerful desktop running full-time in the house, and, with a proper wireless keyboard and mouse, you can use the computer as you normally do.
In Redington, we have a huge scale of high-tech devices, from smartphones, to laptops, to desktops. We distribute in most countries throughout Middle East.
